Based on what he knows of his background, Harold has dismal expectations for how much he's been treated like a person in the past at all. (He really wishes he knew his actual name...) Being told there used to be 'more little kids' makes him look dismayed, shaking his head, but he doesn't follow up on it so as not to ruin the mood.
