[ A half-laugh. ]

It matters to us, of course.

We live... half-underground, where I am from. A city suspended over fissures formed deep into the stone, where the sump pipes from the city across the river pump filth into our lower levels, and their runoff gets into our drinking water. Our air is polluted from the mining, that many of us are forced into doing as children, to make ends meet.

[ A tight smile. ]

We are a resilient people an undercity worth of men and women who would scam you for a dollar, or gut each other for an advantage and dinner the next day.

[ Pride. That's what his voice has. So much pride at that. ] We persist, despite everything. Hearty and strong. We use waste, runoff, and refuse, and make something of it.
