They don't have to ration anything, don't have to set a guard to watch for the dead or their looming enemies. It's just a moment, with what probably will be good food cooking and then served. John doesn't even try small talk, just gets to work and gives Carver smaller tasks.
It should be easy. It might even be nice except that Carver can't shake the feeling that he's being tested somehow. John's easy mood doesn't help. Carver just takes his plate and pulls it in close, instinctively defensive.
But then, it's a sin to be greedy. To take more than your fair share, or to eat before a superior's deemed it time.
