[ clark purses his lips for a moment before he descends, his cape weaving through the air. once his feet touch the ground, he takes a good long look at them both. listens to their heartbeats. ]

( he doesn't really know what he expected, but. as damian had said, superman answered his call.

it's jarring how quickly he had. how one second, the sky had been clear and the literal next, a man — kryptonian? — is hovering there within it. unsettling is also a word for it. especially given the fact that he has no real defense against something like that currently. no way to anticipate or counter such an... ability.

this also puts bruce a little on edge because he clearly doesn't know [of] a superman and, while damian claims that the version of himself he has knows and works with the superman of his gotham — his world — he's very much not the bruce wayne damian knows as his father. therefore, how his... existence here will be perceived by this superman is... unpredictable and bruce doesn't like unpredictable.

also. damn, he really hates when people know who the hell he is behind the cowl. )

[ clark allows himself a dry smile, a tilt of his head. the corners of his eyes are crinkled. ]

Clark Kent. Or Kal-El.

[ he glances at damian for a moment. ]

How much does he know?

( superman smiles, and damian's gaze goes from clark to bruce. watches their expressions carefully, although he's more focused on clark than anything else. bruce, he knows well enough already. )

He knows enough.

( a glance to bruce, before he's tipping his chin up to focus on clark. )

You don't recognize me.

[ clark slowly shakes his head. ]

No. I was aware he had . . . protégés in the past.

[ he seems on the cusp of saying more but dismisses it with another shake of his head. ]

( this batman doesn't have a protégé yet... doesn't even have a son. at least not outside of here.

he glances to damian. fleeting. looks back to clark there. picks up on something else left unsaid but, lets it go. as with everything here, there's a lot for him to take in and he needs to do so quickly. )

You two don't share the same world then.

No. But I suspected as much.

[ from the network replies and this, clark is quite sure he's on his own. which is what he's used to. that doesn't bother him much. he takes in bruce once more, his feelings still in flux. ]

Did you call me to confirm that? Or was there something else?

He could simply be behind.

( the uniform speaks otherwise. if clark was between todd's death and drake's arrival, his gear would be different.

damian takes a step forward, closer to clark. )

I know you're realizing he's younger than you anticipated. Different. I want you to listen to my heartbeat and understand that whilst he may be newer, I am not. I know dozens of ways to remove you from play and would not hesitate to use them if it became necessary.

( said to damian, bruce steps forward — keeps himself between clark and damian with his attention on clark there in front of him. )

I was told you might be a potential ally. I wanted to see Superman for myself.

[ clark merely shoots damian a wintry smile before turning his attention to bruce. he doesn't feel the need to respond to threats. not at this juncture. still, bruce's words raise a certain grudging respect. ]

You're not usually in the business of letting people tell you things.

[ an eyebrow raised at damian. ]

Though I think your circumstances are unusual. You're right. I can be an ally. I'm not fond of threats.

( he's also out of his element here and needs to know everything that he can, as quickly as he can. plus, when has bruce not sought out every single lead or bit of information he can get his hands on? some might think him a touch obsessed for that. he just looks at it as being prepared.

that, of course, doesn't mean they're allies. but he wanted to get a read on superman here. in person. )

And I don't like not knowing what I'm dealing with.

( here. clark. aurora. this sheer concept of all of this. he has nothing to base it off of, nothing he can refer to. )

[ clark seems bemused. lips upturned. ]

That's not surprising. But how will you deal with it?

[ he wonders if bruce will form his own conclusions or be led by others. not that it's clark's business. unless someone makes it his. ]

( what an annoying question. who just asks batman that? )

I have my ways.

( the smile he turns toward damian lacks the warmth it would usually have. but he expects it to, given the lack of recognition. this clark isn't familiar with damian, has less reason to both believe him and understand where the threats are coming from. it's just as well.

he listens to the back and forth for a little while. then, )

( he's reached his own conclusion fast enough. steps out from behind bruce, where he seems intent on shielding damian. offers a hand out in a gesture that shows significantly more respect than he'd generally offer. )

Damian Wayne.

( no point in hiding when they both already have each other's name. he'll fill bruce in later. )

Son of the Bat.

[ clark does warm slightly at that, reaching to shake his hand but not bending so low as to seem rude. ]

It's nice to meet you, Damian.

[ he's not taking the threats personally. he gets it a lot. but he also knows he's not in the best place to respond to it. not long ago, a krypton spear was lodged in his chest. the pain lingers.

he glances at bruce. ]

Are your ways going to be an issue with me?

( he watches the exchange between them — keeps an eye on the way damian behaves as well as clark. there's something almost protective in the way he watches, yet bruce will never acknowledge it. he's still trying to figure out so many things here. with him.

the question comes and bruce stares to clark. quiet. firm. considering. the typical Batman Look most get from him when he's beneath the cowl. )

I don't know yet.

[ clark hums softly. he seems unbothered for the most part. grief is a solid shield from any kind of impact or fear clark could possess. what could bruce do to him that he hasn't already done?

and in the end . . . he did save his mother. ]

That's fine. We can always talk it out whenever you like.

( answering for bruce while he drops his hand. because damian is polite like that.

he keeps his body turned towards clark, but inclines his head back to bruce. meant more for bruce's sake than clark's: his guard is lowered, he's trusting clark somewhat. )

He's not a concern. Yet.

( fleeting glance to damian, he looks back to clark. zeroes in on him as bruce would any rogue he's currently dealing with. he knows he needs to be careful here — knows he's currently not able to match someone who can literally fly, among other things, but. he's also not one to shrink himself to another either. )

( whether that's to damian, to clark, or to both of them. he said what he said. )

[ clark's grin is wry around the corners, which he tosses at bruce briefly before returning his attention back at damian. ]

Well. You can call me anytime if you need me. I am an ally in protecting people, all things considered.

How you deal with it is up to you.

[ clark can't do anything about his powers, his alien heritage or his past. he is who he is. earth was his world, but these are still people. he will continue to have faith, even if no one has any in him. ]

( a statement, not a question. they all already know this. damian's very existence acknowledges it by his standards. )

We'll work on you yet.

( damian got what he needed out of this. his own grin is wide, full of mischief for the few moments he turns it to clark before he's - turning around entirely, back to him as he walks back towards the manor. )

( damian turns to make his leave and bruce stands there. staring still at clark. there's a slight turn he gives, as if to follow after damian, but. he stops. considers something. drops his gaze only for a moment before it flicks back up to clark. )

Is that what he does with you? Calls you when he needs you?

( the batman... the bruce wayne that clark knows. )

[ clark's gaze drops for a moment, contemplative. ]

No. We weren't at that stage. We fought together. Saved the world together. But he . . . wasn't too fond of a Superman.

[ logically, clark knows some of this was fostered by lex luthor. his manipulations were laid bare in the end and bruce knew the truth. but it was still bruce who chose to fight clark while clark never had that choice. ]

( whichever of those clark wants to answer. )

[ clark pauses. he wants to be as fair about this as possible. after all, the guilt isn't on bruce entirely. ]
