Vander was keenly aware of how Carver moved, and it was a rare skill to shift so fluidly. He also wasn't used to it happening to him; he was generally so big and his reputation so concrete that the people at his back were normally for show. He had no doubt Carver meant business.

"You are useful," he said simply. "I haven't had anyone cover my back as well as you for a long time. People underestimate survivors in times of relative peace." He saw value in those skills. He could see how it would fit in here, and he had no issue cultivating that trust between them.
