FEBRUARY MINGLE

WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: February 14th - March
WHERE: Etraya
WHAT: The arrival of newcomers, a mini mission, and some new city features!
NOTES\WARNINGS:

⏵ arrival ⏴

Welcome to Etraya!

Arrival goes as expected - characters awaken on hospital beds and are offered an explanation of their situation: that they have arrived in the city of Etraya, and they are their world's only hope. They are welcome to wander the hospital if they would like to - the upper floors are mostly empty, full of pristine hallways and numerous rooms filled with supplies, cots, and things one would expect from a relatively average 21st-century hospital.

In the hospital's lobby are several party tables set out with miscellaneous baked goods: croissants, cookies, breads, cake slices, as well as tea and coffee to accompany them - or hot chocolate, for those who are opposed to the other offerings.

Outside the hospital, the last remnants of snow are melting in the sunlight as the weather begins to warm up. It's still chilly enough one might want to put on a coat, but not so cold a jacket is necessary for wandering around without freezing off one's fingers.

We hope you enjoy your stay.

⏵ heroes return ⏴

As the Quantum Rail train glides to a halt, returning passengers step out onto familiar ground - the train station, right where they had initially begun their mission. When exiting the station, their earpieces vibrate, indicating the automatic download of a detailed map which highlights key locations, transit paths, and notable landmarks. As Aurora promised, she had been working on a few renovations around Etraya! A sleek trolley system now winds through Etraya, following clearly marked pathways through the city bubble to make travel across the city smoother. However, the trolley only moves one way, eternally following the loop Aurora has set it on. And because of this, it takes six hours to complete it's loop all the way around. Don't miss your stop!

Pets and animals have been returned to their usual preferred areas, some awaiting the arrival of their owners, and others keeping to themselves in the forested areas throughout Etraya.

Beyond the small upgrades, things seem relatively unchanged - until one familiar sign catches the eye. One marked by four vertical lines, methodically crossed out one by one: the final slash has now been drawn through. The tally is complete. What it indicates has yet to be made clear, but it has to mean something, right? No one would go through the effort of making an ominous-sounding sign without following through.

⏵ love in the air ⏴

This Valentines Day, Aurora and the companion bots have opted to try something a little different: they have scattered mystery valentines across the city. Hidden within mailboxes, tucked into cafe menus, slipped under doors, on the outside of high windows for those wall-crawlers to spot. There are countless of these little slips of papers, strewn throughout the city. And within each valentine, is a challenge or gesture to complete. Please feel free to make these up yourselves as long as they fit in with the theme!

Some examples include:

  • Deliver a flower to a stranger.
  • Write a heartfelt poem for someone.
  • Share a box of chocolates!
  • Confess your feelings for another.
  • Play matchmaker for two people - this can be platonic, or romantic!
  • Gift a friend with a stuffed animal.
  • Give five different people a genuine compliment.

While not mandatory, completing five tasks will earn an individual an additional ten points to use towards anything they would like!

Each little Valentine is signed "Your Secret Admirer. ♡", and some of them may even be addressed to specific individuals. Don't be surprised, Eddie, if you see one or two that are specifically addressed to you lurking around your collection of chicken friends!

And while most of these are harmless, some of the valentines cards come with effects for those who come into contact with the paper. Perhaps they thought it was a piece of garbage, or were just kicking it out of the way rather than intending on taking part. It doesn't matter! They get to join in on the fun, too.

Heart Eyes - your pupils literally turn into hearts for a few hours, making it hard to focus on anything other than things (or people) you find attractive.
Love-Struck Stammer - You can only speak in poetic compliments or romantic declarations, regardless of whom you're speaking to.
Chocolate Bliss - Everything feels good. Simple. Easy. As if there's nothing in the world to concern yourself with. You feel happy, without any concerns or worry.
Rose-Tinted Vision - everything looks soft and romantic, as if you're in a romance novel. You know the ones.
Magnetic Attraction - regardless of what you had been doing, you suddenly find yourself unable to leave the side of the person closest to you. Had you been eating chocolates while walking down the street? Well, have fun getting stuck to the guy who'd been out for a jog!
Serenade Syndrome - you find it impossible to resist the urge to sing your words, turning all conversations into love ballads.
Heartstrings - A thread appears, connecting you to someone close by who you share many similarities too. Perhaps you had never met this person before, but the threads tied around your pinky fingers that refuse to let go until you allow yourself to open up to them clearly means you should be a little more familiar with them.

Love is in the air—or maybe just a bit of well-intended chaos! 💕

⏵ NOTES ⏴

Welcome back from the mission, and welcome to Etraya for our newcomers! We've tried to keep this log simple for an easy introduction, as well as some downtime for our mission-goers who worked hard to solve the Quantum Rail mystery.

There is something else going on, but. . . well, no one seems to know what! The computer that had been on the lower floor of the hospital is now missing, and Aurora may seem a little flustered as she flits around Etraya, in search of something.

For all questions relating to this log, please refer to the mod queries comment. All other questions can be directed to the FAQ.

[ Weeks ago, Dylan would have brushed him off. Etraya is weird and obtuse, but at least it provides. But after a conversation with Heather about the Points system being put in place to keep them compliant and well-behaved, he's not so sure. If they step out of line, Etraya could start withholding.

Hell, Etraya did start withholding. Were they not just trapped in a train with a strictly-enforced caste system? Who's to say that won't happen again?

It doesn't hurt to be prepared, at least.

Dylan looks thoughtful, then nods. ]

I'll keep that in mind.

[ The robot waiter returns, bringing two tall glasses of water before disappearing again. Dylan pulls out his phone and scrolls through his photos. ]

Listen... when you got here, I called you the wrong name. I think you ought to know there's someone else here who looks a lot like you.

[ He sets his phone down on the table, face-up, with a photo on display of a man who looks a hell of a lot like Max with a few key differences. He's scruffy, but his clothes are in good condition, and he looks well-fed. It's a candid shot, clumsily holding a chef knife as he tries to chop a fresh green cabbage, other ingredients strewn about him as he tries to put together a Healthy MealTM because that's what good fathers do. (It had tasted pretty okay!)

For emphasis, Dylan grabs the shiny chrome napkin holder and slides it next to the phone, tilting it up a bit to reflect Max's face back at him. ]

[Max watches as his reflection is totally stretched and distorted in the napkin holder, and makes him look absolutely unhinged like a funhouse mirror.]

[Ugh, whatever.

He focuses on the photo instead — not before picking up the glass of whatever and drinking it in big gulps instead. Once half of it has vanished, he can properly reflect on the fact that there's some asshole in this town who looks like him. A lot like him. Maybe if he weren't baked by the sun and beaten to hell every which way, or tormented by decades of violence and death and everything in-between. It's funny. Not really in a ha-ha way, but funny.

Alternate universe kind of funny.]

'Eddie', huh?

[He remembers the name. He always puts things to memory, in case it bites him in the ass later.]

[personal profile] codicies 2025-02-23 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. I'm sure you'll see him around eventually. He's... hard to miss.

[ He slides the napkin holder back & returns his phone to his hoodie pocket. ]

So what should I call you instead?
theroadwarrior: (pic#9654818)

[personal profile] theroadwarrior 2025-02-23 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hard to miss, huh? It's weird enough to consider someone else out there has his face, but now he's got to contend with being mistaken for him? He only hopes the difference is too drastic for people to not notice it. Little does Max realize... he is also hard to miss. For very different reasons.

He shrugs at the question.]

Pick something.

[Said in the exact same tone and lack of care as earlier, when he'd been asked to select something, anything, from the menu.]

[ Just something? Nothing else to go by? Careful, Max — whatever Dylan chooses might just stick.

He looks Max over thoughtfully. The man gives off some feral vibes, like a stray dog who had spent its life fighting to survive.  ]

How about Rover?

[Max rolls his eyes.

... However...]

Heard worse.

['Catdog' is significantly worse; at least this is a name. A common pet's name, but a name. Shockingly, Max has no objections. Rover it is! And Rover is starving. He needs something to distract himself from the sudden gurgling his stomach is doing.]

Who're you?

[ Dylan is pleasantly surprised that Rover here both 1. Recognized the name, and 2. Accepted it anyway. Rover it is. ]

I'm Dylan.

[ See how easy that was? Release name, and there is far less risk of being named after a dog. ]

[His real name is Max, Dylan. He is still undeniably dog-coded.]

Hn. That guy your dad?

[He points toward the pocket where Dylan's phone went. Truthfully, he's mostly trying to scout out more information about that dirty face-snatcher (derogatory). But. Being social is apparently something people prefer out of him, even if he's as rusty as an eradiated tin can from the 80's.]

[personal profile] codicies 2025-03-01 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Kind of.

He's got my dad's name, and kind of a similar history. But we're from different worlds and where he's from, he doesn't have a son.

[ How much of Etraya's weirdness are you willing to learn about today, Rover? ]
theroadwarrior: (pic#11116938)

cw: hallucinations, allusions to a deceased child

[personal profile] theroadwarrior 2025-03-01 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh.

[That's bizarre, but... well. This place is bizarre. It is what it is, in the same vein that he's got a literal doppelganger. As Dylan explains, Max's eyes drift slowly, the soft babbling of a ghost drawing him toward the empty seat beside the blonde teenager. A blurry-faced babe knocks around a doll made out of washcloth; Max remembers watching Jessie curse to herself softly, when she'd been trying to figure out how to make it.

Sprog screams shrilly in delight from a round space where a mouth could be, and Max's jaw twitches before he looks at Dylan again.]

... Don't have one either.

But. Doubt we have much in common.

[ Dylan catches the shift in Max's gaze, glances over briefly to see what he's looking at. When nothing's there, he dismisses it. ]

You're probably right. No offense, but you look like you've been through hell. Maybe you have been, I don't know.

Eddie... he's been through some stuff, too. I can tell. He worries a lot. I try not to give him more reasons to be worried.

[As Dylan speaks, Max studies a person walking by. He doesn't seem to want to completely look away until they've fully walked away. Then his gaze flicks to Dylan, brow furrowing. Been through hell? Maybe that's so. Sometimes it feels like a purgatory, or some kind of great punishment that compounds with every poor decision he makes. Decisions that are done out of a need for survival — but still poor decisions regardless.

Thumbing at a callous on his palm, he hums.]

You want to stop giving him reasons, you should probably stop talking to strangers eating trash.

[Stranger danger, and all of that. If anything, it's a more important rule than it ever has been. He's used to kids being used as battle fodder, child brides, food — you name it, and a kid has suffered for it. Dylan at least looks old enough to fight back, so that's good; Max is a little tired of seeing children dying in his lifetime.]
