![]() ⏵ a hero's return ⏴ As champions exit the Labyrinth, they’ll find that their environment has gone through some fairly drastic changes. Where there used to be larger bodies of water is now thinner rivers going through land; the amount of bridges connecting landmasses has decreased, given what had been individual islands are now much more connected. In addition, Etraya is significantly more green; flowers bloom, birds chirp cheerfully, and there are numerous additional species of insects, mammals, and aquatic creatures throughout the lands. Baby foxes roam through forested areas, bees pollinate the flowers to spread them more thoroughly around the inhabited areas, and it feels brighter. Or perhaps that’s just in comparison to how the Labyrinth had been. There are more areas to explore, new facilities, animals, and Etraya feels significantly more settled than it had before. Aurora’s promise of renovations had been true. And if one looks up, they may notice a city bubble visible on the closest planet that hadn't been visible before. ![]() ⏵ coffee break ⏴ After hearing Clarke’s suggestion, Aurora sets up a new cafe close to the apartment complex, and sends out notices to individuals with mandatory coffee hour times listed for them to come to Corrine's Cafe and make a few friends. While the note does state that it is mandatory, there will be no follow-up from Aurora nor the companion bots to ensure those who receive notes do show. Given this is Aurora trying to take suggestions in mind and see how successful they are among the citizens of Etraya, however, following directives may not be a terrible idea. It's up like a modern-day, smaller cafe. One walks in through the front door, and is greeted by a companion bot behind the counter who offers a wave of their hand and a friendly “Welcome! Let me know when you’re ready to order”. The menu offers lattes, mochas, espresso, black coffee, several different kinds of teas, and a few drinks that are a little odd to find in a cafe; ale, canned sodas and coffees, numerous bottles of wine, but only pinot noir. Soft music plays in the background, impossible to place but it sounds as if it may be based on tracks that were popular in the early 90s. Tables and booths are set up to seat two to four, with packets of sugar and small containers of creamer set out towards the middle. There are charging stations set up at every table, which may seem strange considering phones and laptops aren’t widely available, but Aurora’s doing her best. There are also a few bookshelves full of the classics, a few historical fiction, and several written by H.P. Lovecraft. Each seat has a placard in front of it, with a name, and a ‘fun fact’. One might say “Hello! My name is Joe, and I like to paint!” Another may say “Hi, I’m Jill! My sister died tragically in front of me and I’ve never gotten over it.” ![]() ⏵ new horizons ⏴ Several of the new bridges found in Etraya now have signs posted just outside of them, and on those signs is a QR code that the earpiece’s HUD can scan. Scanning this with the HUD will bring up a scavenger hunt, listing several items and circling areas where they can be found. Some of these objects will be obvious: find Corrine at Corrine’s Cafe - the companion bot who runs the counter, find a delicious meal at Bangsan Market, break into S.T.A.R Labs, or find room 87 at Point Blanc Academy. Some will be less obvious, like locating a bat, becoming friends with an archer, find a pink shirt, open bagged milk without making a mess, or get a drink at the mutant-friendly pub. Please feel free to make up your own items to find around Etraya! Welcome to our mid-month mingle! Please feel free to use this to explore Etraya, put up wildcard prompts (you don't need to use the above!), or use the open prompts to assist in jumpstarting cr. This mingle covers the period from May 17th to May 31st. Our next mission (and next mod log) will not go up until June 7th. |

Taking a sip of his own coffee, he lifts a brow.]
Oh? They ran away to the circus? I wish I could have. I kept trying to run back, but they wouldn't let me stay. No, I was born into it. I was a part of the Flying Graysons, and then my parents were murdered, their wires on the trapeze were cut and I was taken in as a ward by someone determined to keep me. I never forgot my moves, though.
no subject
Hi, I'm
Katherine. KATE!!!I have a thing for bows.]
Yeah, it's a long story and his, so I won't bore you with it.
[Kate knows Clint wouldn't mind her sharing most of the details, but she tries to keep her oversharing to her own information.]
Oh, that's cool. The trapeze part, not the murder, sorry about that. I'm guessing circus kids don't dream of running away to the normal life? Not if you were trying to go back.
no subject
It's alright. I'm sure he learned his share. Is he... here?
[It almost sounded like Dick might be able to hear it, which surprised him. It shouldn't considering he knew of people from the same universe, even if none of them were from his own-- several of them had similar names so there was a start.]
No, the cops were determined though. They thought life with a billionaire would be better off for me, go figure.
no subject
[There were plenty of others from home or versions of it across the multiverse that Kate knew here. If she knew that the same was true for Dick, she might question it more, but as it is, it's almost just another day ending in y.
Somehow she manages to not spit out her coffee at that last part.]
Oh yeah, they would think that. Goes to show what they know. Were you lucky enough to be raised by nameless staff?
no subject
[Dick can only shrug there. The other Dick's multiverse is rather different from his own, and he's got his own people here. It's a strange thing-- but Dick is finally starting to adjust. He's not all that used to mutliverses.
Most people react pretty differently to that response, Kate's was new. Dick might like her. ]
Ha. I wish it was like that. Alfred was pretty awesome. He was the one who brought me dinner when I was sent to my room without food for a week, or had to train non-stop. I got no idea why Bruce thought he wanted an orphan, other than he was one.
[The last part was a tiny slip-up, but he mentioned training all the time. People merely assumed he was a fitness nut, and that his dad was a martial artist nut. It was easy to push them to assume that until he learned to trust them.]
no subject
[And no, it's not confusing. Maybe.]
Trust me, nameless servants aren't the best parents. They tend to only care as far as the money goes.
[The only sign Kate might have caught the slip is a quick glance up from her pastry. She'd done enough of her own non-stop training to know he might have been doing it on his own to eventually escape, or he could have been working toward the Olympics. It happens.]
Sounds like you had someone on your side.
no subject
[He smiled lopsidedly. He hadn't thought they were the same, actually. He didn't even think about code names being the same. He didn't know what the other Dick Grayson went by on the network, probably something with a pun in it knowing him. He was the brighter of the pair-- or that's how Dick would describe him.
Being taught to always be aware of people having been a 'detective' all his life, Dick noticed her look, but he ignored it for now. He nodded at her idea of wealth. He'd been to plenty of parties and knew how it worked in most places. Alfred was an exception to most rules. ]
I doubt the money would dry up, but even if it did, Alfred would make a lot of it. He raised Bruce, my ...benefactor, from childhood. His parents died, and Alfred raised him. He was a good teacher, great cook. Stern, and didn't stand for messes in the manor, but he couldn't stay mad for too long. Bruce Wayne, I think he's a trillionaire by now. He... He trained me hard in just about every martial art, weaponry, he wanted me to be disciplined, to have more than the Wayne Foundation behind me.
no subject
[Not that she's much better.]
Sounds like you had a good one. I think there might have been an Alfred once, but he was gone between school breaks. My dad preferred us dependent on him and his money. I don't think he realized all the training I was doing was to put guys like him in jail eventually.
[That may be more about her life at home with her parents than anyone other than Clint, Billy, or Krouse has learned. She doesn't mind being the poor little rich girl, as long as others realize there's more to her than just the name.]
no subject
I did. I lucked out. I think I needed to somewhere. Man, I can only imagine. I mean, Bruce, yeah, he had some serious power trips. Set me up outside once, nothing but me and the woods. Teach me not to fear a damn thing. Had a wolf after me. I think I was thirteen? Killed the thing with a damn rock, but fuck. It was screwed up. I learned though. I did.
[He didn't say that Bruce was training him to be like him, to become like Batman. Still, that's what he thought Dick needed. Maybe it was in a way, but Bruce didn't know how to do both, be Batman and a dad. ]
Sorry you had to go through that shit, but I get it. Then you get stuck with all the crap that wealth requires too. The smiling, the things the name require. Ugh. I hate that the most. Being anonymous is one of the best feelings.
no subject
I don't do anonymous so much, just accepted a better name and position for myself.
[Some might think she could have picked a better mentor, but she has been good for him as well.]
And you don't get to pick your parents. You can pick your family, though, and I've been lucky to have some great friends and family now.
no subject
Where we are, you can't be out in the open. It doesn't jive. I'd get shit for even telling you this much. I have picked a good family where I'm from. We all kinda went our different ways before I got yanked here. Was feeling ...
[Looking down, Dick wishes his coffee held a little more beer in it and less coffee. He liked coffee, but when he talks feelings-- he hates talking about shit. He's learning though. It's a recent development. ]
... was feeling less than stellar about the whole thing. They all call and facetime. It's great. The kids are grown. I'm barely thirty. [He laughs.]
no subject
I'm lucky I can be open about who I am, but there was a whole fight at home about people having the right to not be known. There was a whole law passed. [Kate still has feelings about the Super-human Registration Act. And the Mutant Registration Act. ] I have friends I've never seen without their masks, and that's fine. People should have the right to protect their secrets.
Or share them.
[Kate signals for more coffee and then adds a laugh at the kids are grown comment. The Young Avengers were no more -- spread out across the world, and universe. Cassie is no longer a tiny teenager, even when she's tiny.]
They tend to do that. We all grow up and move on, but as long as you're still there for each other when you need to be, that's all that matters.
[Billy and Teddy are running two alien species, but Kate knows if she called them, Billy would get them there before she finished asking for help.]
But, it sounds like you're looking for your place in everything. Maybe that's why you got pulled here? Don't ask me about the rest of us, though.
no subject
[The very public face that wishes to keep the other life very private. It's nice to be a place where Dick knows that he's got a few people who won't eventually care. He also knows that people in his respective party do care what he does with his face, because he's only semi-alone. It's fucking frustrated being all alone, and yet somehow not at all. He doesn't have rights to tell or not.
It's decided for him here by the others who are not from his world. ]
That's important. I don't know so much if I've got my rights here. There are people from universes adjacent to mine, even another me, so they make the decisions on if I get a say on revealing myself or not to the people around me, because then I can give away their secrets. I could complain, but I'm done with that for right now. It's too nice a muffin to complain.
[He smiles and rips off the corner top of the apple-cinnamon muffin he got, because a little bit of sweet never killed him. He trains hard enough to be able to eat ten of these and still not gain an ounce.]
They'd come though, my Titans from home. We saved the universe, they'd come. They need to be young, though, fly a little.
