closed — in pitch dark, I go walking in your landscape
WHO: heather mason + knife (pending)
WHEN: evening 06/28
WHERE: robin's deli (and beyond)
WHAT: social interactions leading to rodent like behavior
NOTES\WARNINGS: none at the moment
( it was a rare occasion when things calmed down in etraya and heather was able to look forward to something as simple as a day at the beach. while it was certainly meant to accommodate new arrivals and help them feel at ease and at home, it was also an opportunity for heather to just indulge in behaving like a normal teenage girl. all of those wishes and desires her past self had for such happiness had to be fulfilled somehow—
but she was still a responsible business owner and so before fun could be had, she decided to swing by the deli and make sure everything was put away properly. no food left out of the refrigerator, anyone lingering by for food got served, and all was cleaned up and put away. what heather wasn't counting on was the fact that mr. cheese didn't quite agree with her plans. as soon as she set his cage down, he began to toy with the gate and ended up breaking loose, running out as she was distracted.
soon though she noticed him missing and began to walk out the deli, locking it up and following along a trail of footsteps as she did her best to find her friend. that trail of footsteps became a trail of wrappers and garbage, leading her right to a pile where mr. cheese was standing on under one of the bridges nearby. she bent down to scoop him up, rising up and noticing all the filth and piles of mess all over the place. )
What....what is this? Who the hell has been eating all this food and just leaving the trash here?
( a noise soon snapped her out of what she was looking at and she turned around to see a dark figure looming behind her. with a loud yell, she stepped back and onto a bundle of trash before squinting her eyes. )
Wait....I know you you're....that weirdo who goes to the deli a lot right?

Fuck. What does she want? I keep from setting green foot in there and now this?
speaking of green: they hastily shift to fill in the shape of the half-orc, tugging on fasteners and rearranging clothing components to properly cover broader shoulders and longer legs -- gradual, snaking shifting from a smaller-sized creature to the shaggy-haired, scarred figure they knew had at least acquaintance with the intruder. perhaps that'd help? one way or the other, anyway.
What the fuck are you looking for, girly?
they artfully keep in silence, watching her crouch and rummage through their garbage and stash of just heaps of miscellaneous shit, some more plainly useful than others (there is no reason to have 3 defibrillators, but they were there within reach, so, y'know).
Wait--is that--?
what the hell. Oh shit. A rat.
okay, maybe this isn't a shakedown. Pending steers out of the shadows and starts to cross the distance to approach, becoming that large figure silhouetted by streetlight that Heather is startled by seconds later; admittedly, Knife's almost as scared, but they hide it better.
their eyes wince at the loud yell and crunch of packaging underfoot. I hope there wasn't anything valuable in there. I forget.
they stand stone still while the girl makes the connection, at which point, Pending scowls. Weirdo? Hello? I'm not the weirdo rummaging through someone else's shit for rats!
...
She really is just. Clutching that little thing huh.
...
...Does she make some of the food with rats...
blinkblink.
Focus.]
...Pending. [beat.] I...don't go in. When you're there. Since you don't like it. [So don't you make a fucking fuss about it, kiddo!]

pending? 'what kind of name is pending', she thought before she finally began to move forward, head tilting in a curious expression.
she didn't like them going in? since when was that the case? she just didn't like the accusations tossed at her unjustly. clearly they had issues with being normal— but she won't voice that. instead she held up her pet rat before them. )
When did I say I didn't like it? I just didn't want you tormenting me with false accusations. Do you do that to Maria? When I'm not there?
( the other silent hill girly running the deli, but that was neither here nor there. )
Anyways what is all this....do you live here?

What? What is this? A fuckin' peace offering?
the blatant stress and unease in her voice is stressing them out, feeling their stomach clench. it almost makes them want to apologize for...for what. for fucking what! existing! arugh!
Who the fuck is Maria!!! Do I look like someone who's on a name-basis with people!
they leave the question of this Maria lady unanswered and gladly.
Maybe she's gonna throw the rat at me and run for her life.]
...Sometimes? Why?

( in the face of all of their internal monologuing and debating, heather stood before them with an ever increasing worried expression. it was becoming clear that she was growing more and more distressed by seeing such a sight― not because it terrified her, but seeing anyone living like this unnecessarily was well...
something was wrong with them. so with a raised eyebrow she began to walk around a bit, kicking a few piles of trash with her brown boot before she turned to face pending once more. )
This is....this is disgusting. Do you have an apartment? You know one of the free ones they give us here? Is it.....is it this dirty there too?
( she wasn't sure if there was any kind of welfare or check up services here but maybe there should be one. heather didn't want to assume anything but given their behavior well....
maybe she should try and be friends with them― to prevent them from fully going rodent. )

I don't know anything about that. I stay out of the way. [and have no concept of litter laws.]
