They're finicky, it's not on you.

[ And it makes a good excuse to lean forward, allowing him to lower his voice so it stays between them. He's not sharing secrets, so much as discussing topics that most may not want to discuss in the open like this. ]

I've seen a couple of others. And this one? Definitely the least-worst. Like, all you got to do is play family and follow curfew, and everything's fine. Others? Survival of the fittest. And I am so not built for that.

Are the missions not trying for you? The consequences for simply staying outside after dark? There must be some kind of survival of the fittest in these, too.

[ Her expression pinches in concern; to her understanding, someone was asked to go around and kill people at random. She isn't sure if these were details they could speak aloud, if Declan was now speaking lowly. ]

I heard about the last mission - that must have been frightening.

There are the missions, but... [ Declan trails off, lifting his shoulders in a shrug after pulling himself upright. ] The missions exist on other planets, too. They're not something we're going to get out of, so most've us just kinda treat them like they're separate. You know? Like when you walk into a movie theater and immerse yourself in a film, but when you step out--life continues outside the movie.

Life continues outside the movie, yes, but it doesn't make the movie feel like it was less real.

[ She reaches out to rest a hand on his shoulder, eyes concerned. ] Especially if the last one must have felt like some sick, murder-mystery thriller. How did you fare in it? Were you... alright?

Oh, no. I died real early on. Bullet to the side of my skull.

[ He even leans back enough to turn his head, showing the scar just behind his ear. ]

So I was out for most of it. Wouldn't be the first time.

[ Not the first time. Ororo's expression flickers in concern at the idle approach to death and coming back to life. How familiar and reminiscent of home. ]

That's a unique way of looking at death. I imagine that that must be... normal around here, as opposed to other planets where there is an emphasis of survival.

[ Despite her best efforts, the comparison to how Krakoans and Arrakki view death and life is right there. Was that by design? Hmm. ]

That's how it is, isn't it? Death isn't permanent. Or at least, it isn't here.

[ He seems to be listening quite closely to her, now. Watching her, waiting to see how she responds. ]

Getting through missions alive isn't the point, it's getting through them successfully.

[ She feels his eyes watching her intently and seems to misinterpret them - one of her hands rises reflexively to the rather low neckline of her blouse, like he might have been trying to get an eyeful. She frowns, arching an accusatory eyebrow at him as she tilts her body away. ]

... It's not permanent back on my world either. [ She finally says, after a little consideration. A little white lie, since she's outright rejected Krakoan resurrection protocols for herself, but Declan didn't need to know that. ]

I hope that having a similar outlook will serve me well during the missions Eos gives us. But I think I will try to get through our missions in one piece, and with whatever points I can manage to accrue.

You'll do great.

[ The smile he gives is genuine, and he's careful to keep his eyes up rather than looking down at the neckline she's covering. Just in case she gets the wrong idea. ]

You look like you'd be a great ally to have on the field.

Do I? [ She hums thoughtfully, relaxing her hold on her blouse a little. She knew she could give off an impression, but she was trying to be low-key, this time. ]

Do you have particular criteria when you are scoping out allies?

Hmm… Sort of. Though I think I just feel it out. It’s not a checklist sort of deal. But you seem like you have it together. Or at least like you can pretend to hold it together long enough.

Plus, you’re pretty fit.

[He says, with his eyes at the bottom of the mug to look at the bit that clung to the glass, shrugging a little. She already covered her blouse, he didn’t need to be too audacious.]

Seems like you won’t tire easily. Me? Some days I don’t know why I was picked at all.
