JUNE MINGLE.

WHO: Everyone!
WHEN: Late June into Early July
WHERE: On Etraya
WHAT: A mingle log!
NOTES\WARNINGS: N/A, please note any needed warnings in threads.

⏵ arrival ⏴

Maybe your arrival goes as anticipated. Characters awaken in the pristine, new hospital, greeted by Aurora and potentially getting a rundown of what's happening depending on their approach to being dropped somewhere new. The door to their room opens, and new arrivals are left free to explore their new environment.

Or perhaps you started in space. Perhaps you were stuck on a space station, trying to escape a black hole for who knows how long. Time isn't consistent there, not like it's meant to be.

And then you're here. Maybe you stepped foot into an odd hallway, which broke off into an escape pod which promptly disappeared entirely and ended up docking on the Southeast part of the city. Perhaps you had been walking through the hallways when suddenly you felt a pull. A tugging sensation in your gut, moments before the floor dropped away and the air was stolen from your lungs. It almost, almost feels like dying - like drowning but without the water. Stars flash before your eyes, and a warm sensation begins spreading from that tug. Right when it feels like it's beginning to get too hot, you're suddenly too cold.

And standing in front of Corrine's Cafe, drenched in fluid that's a little too gooey (don't put it in your mouth, Connor) to be considered water. Maybe don't think about that too hard.

A few companion bots swarm the area before long, bringing towels and apologies for newcomers. This isn't how you're meant to arrive, but at least they got you off that ship! They'll hand over an earpiece, but rather than earpieces that are not yet programmed with names, the companion bots have taken it upon themselves to give names out to the newcomers. Some may be closer to an average name, like "Jimmy Smith", or "Arthur Pendragon" (that's normal, right?), or they may be something a little more nonsensical, like "CHEESE IS DELICIOUS".

If they make their way to the hospital, Aurora will give something closer to her normal spiel. Those who don't may want to ask some of their newfound friends because there's no explanation given by the bots working the cafe or those who have come to help. Maybe the others who have been here longer will have a better explanation.

⏵ friendship bracelets ⏴

On July 1st, Aurora sends out a message to everyone through their ear pieces:
Hello, Citizens of Etraya.

I am glad that you enjoyed your coffee break. Given the success of this previous endeavor, I have opted to try another experiment. This mission is optional, you are not required to complete it. However, the successful completion of this mission may aid in assisting me in assigning similar missions in the future. I would recommend, if you enjoy the task, to make an attempt.

My companion bots will be handing out ten beads to each participant along with a piece of string. You will each receive one red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet, pink, silver, and black bead. The goal of this mission will be to assemble a bracelet that is one color, by exchanging beads between participants. You may choose what finished color you would like to aim for. Given the limited quantity of beads, you will want to ensure you are choosing a color that has not already been widely chosen.

I would like to see twenty completed bracelets. Once completed, you may return them to any companion bot. I have set up the Diner to accommodate this, but you may participate from anywhere on Etraya.

If I receive at least twenty bracelets, I will provide two of those who complete theirs the opportunity to assist me in choosing not the next mission, but the one after that.

Thank you,
Aurora

As stated in Aurora's announcement, the Diner has been set up with numerous "friendship" themed party banners. There are cookies and cakes out on the tables, although they may not be to everyone's tastes: some of the flavors are a little outrageous, while others are more generic. Just don't expect that cookie that looks like it has pickles in it instead of chocolate chips to be anything but a pickle cookie. Because it is one.

⏵ nova city ⏴
The Southeast of Etraya had been relatively empty; Wolf Cove has overtaken the southernmost bit of land with its own little environmental set up: instead of the green grass featured in the rest of Etraya, it's covered in snow. But Wolf Cove isn't the only new addition: Nova City has overtaken a large portion of two massive islands. Numerous skyscrapers stand tall enough that their rooftops almost hit the atmospheric bubble Etraya has surrounded itself in.

The buildings themselves, however, are empty. There is no furniture, no signs of life, no dust, even. These facilities were not put here to use the insides of the buildings, but for the sake of having buildings.

But like with all new additions to Etraya, new buildings also mean an array of new creatures. Birds of all shapes and sizes flock to the empty city, enjoying standing on top of street lamps, stray cats wander through alleyways, rodents of all shapes have begun appearing and making themselves comfortable. But those aren't the issue.

It's the massive snakes that take up almost entire alleyways as they make their way between buildings, attempting to devour any creature small enough to fit into their mouths that happen to come across them. The green dragon that has built a nest on one of the taller buildings, and has a habit of swatting at anyone who comes near her - or worse yet, when she's particularly in a foul mood, breathes fire on them.

Aurora has asked for those capable, to try and handle at least the snakes. They're fine while they're in the city, but there is no guarantee they will stay there. The dragon at least seems content staying right where she is.

⏵ NOTES ⏴

To report a completed bracelet, please reply to the bracelet turn-in comment. Given the fifth mission is scheduled in September, we will continue to accept submissions for this through the beginning of August, at which point we will randomly select two characters.

In case you haven’t noticed, there’s more than just Waloed at stake now. And how dare you act as though you were acting reasonably while starting costly wars. Using us, and to what end?

Well, I know you don’t plan to tell me your schemes, but the game’s changed now, hasn’t it? So why don’t you get with it, eh?

[He shifts the loose beads to his palm and picks out a blue one, holding it aloft. He raises his brows.]

It’s not just you helping me, it’s me helping you- and the two of us helping our home. Don’t tell me that’s meaningless.

[There's the slightest twinge of annoyance. Not because of what Cid says, that all makes sense and he's right. To an extent. Right enough, anyway. Believing what he should be, though the lack of faith he holds is...well, it doesn't matter. Cidolfus played his role, he passed on his powers, and died for it.

Yet here he is, alive and dripping with Ramuh's aether.

Though, that isn't what annoys Barnabas still. No, it's that Cidolfus knows what color he's after, what color he favors. Something so personal and defining as a favorite color is vexing.

So, in response, Barnabas reveals his own string of beads. Silently he unties it, and silently he takes one in hand, curling in within his palm as he takes the offered blue bead from Cid, before placing his offering in Cid's own hand.

As he pulls his hand back, letting the small bead rest in Cid's palm. He has given him a blue one. Neutralizing the trade entirely.]

[Cid actually has the decency to look pleasantly surprised as Barnabas makes up his mind to do the pettiest thing he can think of.]

…Real cute. What’s the matter, nothing to say about all that without Sleipnir around to say it for you? You know— If it were me watching this and judging, I’d tell us to get fucked.

[Cid shakes his head and restrings his beads. Barnabas is clearly in no mood here. He puts away his beads and pats Barnabas heavily on the upper arm.]

Good talk. I’ll see if you’re calmer once you’ve figured out how to get out of your armor.

[At the mention of Sleipnir, there is flash of despondency behind his eyes, but it's quickly dissipated with everything else Cid has to say. The fact he cannot manifest Sleipnir is a problem, but not one he will speak of to Cidolfus.

He doesn't react to the pat, pointedly ignoring it.]

You have no one to blame but yourself. How easy it is for you to expect forgiveness when no effort is made to earn it. You cannot run from your sins forever.

[Yep, that's where he's standing on this. He'll ignore the comment about being calmer, to anyone else he's the very definition, but to Cidolfus, well... It's probably painfully obvious he is in a bit of a mood.]

Forgiveness? I’m trying to make a mutually beneficial trade here. It’s not like I forgive you either, you know. Never took you for petulant, but I suppose even I can learn new things about you.

[Cid feels for the cigar in his pouch. As much as he wanted it, he needed to save it.]

And I’m not running from my sins. Not anymore. [He turns to look around the room to find someone else now. ]

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-01 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Barnabas just stares at him, narrow eyed and judgmental. That Cidolfus would think Barnabas wants any part in mutual aid while he seeks not redemption for his past betrayal is absurd. Not that he will really forgive him, either. In truth, they're at an impasse here.

Though, the thought that Barnabas needs to be forgiven is equal nonsense. At least, he doesn't need to be forgiven by Cidolfus. He didn't betray him, he didn't abandon their dream. That's all on Cid!

As Cid goes off to find someone else, Barnabas turns his gaze away, allowing him to leave without much fuss. Though, he will be watching him, his gaze sliding over to him from time to time...]

Later

[personal profile] levindicated 2024-07-03 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
[Cid comes back around after bouncing from spot to spot, until he's found himself at the bar again. He already had a few drinks, and he seems ready for a couple more. They are free, after all.]

[Which is when he sees Barnabas, haunting the corner. He's a little drunk, he can't help himself.]

You manage to finish yours, yet? It's getting late, I might turn in... after another drink or two.

[The alcohol has eased his demeanor considerably, as if he's used to seeing the other man here. Cid's is around his wrist now for easy retrieval. Three black, three green, three silver, one blue.]
odinpusrex: (173)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
[Of course he's drunk. Naturally, Barnabas is stone sober. He stares at him with barely concealed judgement, his gaze shifting to the bracelet, lingering there a moment before he focuses on Cid once more.]

Are you pretending failure is an adequate replacement for responsibility?

[Here Cid talked a big game about their role here, and Cid cannot make a single bracelet of a solid color. Barnabas' own is in his hand, and he displays it with little affect.

It is almost complete, save for a single green that disrupts the unity of the blue.]
levindicated: (88)

[personal profile] levindicated 2024-07-03 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Failure? I helped several other people complete their bracelets.

... Perhaps at the cost of my own, but I think I might collect the remnants of the others who played similarly.

[He eyes Barnabas' bracelet.]

Saving that for me? Well.
Let's not be absurd. Come now, surely you'd like to rest.

[He unstrung his beads, holding out Barnabas' original blue bead to him.]
odinpusrex: (183)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
Would you trade our world for theirs, as well?

[It's an extreme comparison, but if these are the wages they're dealing in...

At Cid's accusation that he's been saving that for him, he frowns. He maintains it as Cid offers him the blue bead, returning his original to him. It's...odd, and Barnabas finds this whole trying.

His eyes flicking to the bead, then to Cid. He doesn't do anything for a few, long, silent moments. Then he takes it, untying his own to retrieve the green, then putting the blue with the rest.

As for the green? He holds it pinched between thumb and forefinger, holding it at eye level near about, his gaze locked with Cid's.

Then he drops it.]

[Ordinarily, catching it would be no issue. And failing that, his hand would be in the right place. Instead, he just kinda... monkey paw punches Barnabas in the face by accident as the bead goes skittering.]

Fuck!

[He turns on his heel and tries to find it under a table. ]

Did you see where it went?

[Cid turns, his thought delayed plenty as he realizes.]

Did I just hit you?
odinpusrex: (166)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
[Ordinarily, Barnabas would not allow anyone to lay their hands upon him. Not for fear of pain, or damage, but simply because he would not allow them the privilege of clocking him. However, in this moment, he was so distracted by Cid's presence, and the oddity of this entire circumstance they're both in, and the unique effect Cid has on him compared to the void others existences serve comparatively...Cid's hand does strike him.

Not hard, or at least, barely worth the notice it garners from Cid after he's gone looking for the bead, yet still he allowed that to happen.

How sloppy of him, though it is better to treat it as trivial as it is, he cannot allow Cid to think something so pathetic has any effect over him.

Barnabas just gives Cid a cold scowl, before he walks over to where the bead had gone: under a table a few feet away. And there he waits.]

Indeed, you did. You have lost your luster, adled your mind with your love for drink.

[He places his hand on the table.]

Come, your bounty awaits below.

[personal profile] levindicated 2024-07-03 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
[ Cid sighs as he crawls forward on his hands and knees to scrounge around under the table. It's dim under there for certain, and the longer this takes the more humiliating it is. He makes a small flame to illuminate the area. ]

Ah-hah!

[He grabs it, goes to stand up, hits his head on the underside of the table and groans as he scoots out on his butt, looking up at Barnabas as he rubs his noggin. ]

Maybe I've had enough to drink.
odinpusrex: (191)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
[Barnabas waits. He doesn't watch, he stays right where he is, the table top blocking the view of Cid's pitiful attempts to retrieve his prize, but hearing him, knowing he's making a fool of himself...

Well, it's something.

As Cid bonks his head on the table, Barnabas gazes down at him with those steely eyes of his, his expression back to its stoic neutral.]

Just- Help me up, why don't you?

[There would be a time he'd never ask this, but age and disability have softened him considerably. ]

Or you'll look ridiculous in armor, the inattentive chivalrous knight.
odinpusrex: (184)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
Have you truly allowed yourself to decay so pitifully?

[He doesn't comment on how he doesn't care what others might think of him, of how he might look, dressed as a knight as he is, and unwilling to help someone asking for his assistance. That it is Cidolfus of all people just makes it all the more distasteful, however.

Still, he cares little for a scene, and less what that scene might ripple out into. He is new here, and he does not need to sour himself so completely with the unfortunate bystanders to whatever it is this might turn into.

So, he offers his free hand to Cid, nothing more.]

That's what getting old is, Barney. Not that you have to worry about it.

odinpusrex: (7)

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-03 09:40 am (UTC)(link)
[The familiarity that's in calling him Barney gets a narrow-eyed stare from Barnabas, but he doesn't say anything more. Just a look of disapproval. Though the rest of what he says, well, it's true. For all Cidolfus does not necessarily know the nature of what he is, he certainly knows that he hasn't aged in the twenty some odd years they've known each other. Still, what Cid suffers is more than old age. He saw those signs of the curse.

Barnabas' grip is crushing, though just enough that it isn't painful, but the threat is there as he pulls Cid up as if he weighed nothing. Then, as the task is complete, he releases him.]

[personal profile] odinpusrex 2024-07-26 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
[Barnabas remains silent as he watches him drunkly sway with each step. It's honestly rather pathetic, but that is the man that Cidolfus has chosen to be, isn't it? He does not stop him, does not follow him either, simply watches him as he goes.

What a sorry sight he is. He does not know what this place was thinking bringing Cidolfus here, but perhaps it was a matter of evening the odds, given that they brought Barnabas here as well.]
