![]() ⏵ arrival ⏴ Maybe your arrival goes as anticipated. Characters awaken in the pristine, new hospital, greeted by Aurora and potentially getting a rundown of what's happening depending on their approach to being dropped somewhere new. The door to their room opens, and new arrivals are left free to explore their new environment. Or perhaps you started in space. Perhaps you were stuck on a space station, trying to escape a black hole for who knows how long. Time isn't consistent there, not like it's meant to be. And then you're here. Maybe you stepped foot into an odd hallway, which broke off into an escape pod which promptly disappeared entirely and ended up docking on the Southeast part of the city. Perhaps you had been walking through the hallways when suddenly you felt a pull. A tugging sensation in your gut, moments before the floor dropped away and the air was stolen from your lungs. It almost, almost feels like dying - like drowning but without the water. Stars flash before your eyes, and a warm sensation begins spreading from that tug. Right when it feels like it's beginning to get too hot, you're suddenly too cold. And standing in front of Corrine's Cafe, drenched in fluid that's a little too gooey (don't put it in your mouth, Connor) to be considered water. Maybe don't think about that too hard. A few companion bots swarm the area before long, bringing towels and apologies for newcomers. This isn't how you're meant to arrive, but at least they got you off that ship! They'll hand over an earpiece, but rather than earpieces that are not yet programmed with names, the companion bots have taken it upon themselves to give names out to the newcomers. Some may be closer to an average name, like "Jimmy Smith", or "Arthur Pendragon" (that's normal, right?), or they may be something a little more nonsensical, like "CHEESE IS DELICIOUS". If they make their way to the hospital, Aurora will give something closer to her normal spiel. Those who don't may want to ask some of their newfound friends because there's no explanation given by the bots working the cafe or those who have come to help. Maybe the others who have been here longer will have a better explanation. ![]() ⏵ friendship bracelets ⏴ On July 1st, Aurora sends out a message to everyone through their ear pieces: Hello, Citizens of Etraya. As stated in Aurora's announcement, the Diner has been set up with numerous "friendship" themed party banners. There are cookies and cakes out on the tables, although they may not be to everyone's tastes: some of the flavors are a little outrageous, while others are more generic. Just don't expect that cookie that looks like it has pickles in it instead of chocolate chips to be anything but a pickle cookie. Because it is one. ![]() ⏵ nova city ⏴ The buildings themselves, however, are empty. There is no furniture, no signs of life, no dust, even. These facilities were not put here to use the insides of the buildings, but for the sake of having buildings. But like with all new additions to Etraya, new buildings also mean an array of new creatures. Birds of all shapes and sizes flock to the empty city, enjoying standing on top of street lamps, stray cats wander through alleyways, rodents of all shapes have begun appearing and making themselves comfortable. But those aren't the issue. It's the massive snakes that take up almost entire alleyways as they make their way between buildings, attempting to devour any creature small enough to fit into their mouths that happen to come across them. The green dragon that has built a nest on one of the taller buildings, and has a habit of swatting at anyone who comes near her - or worse yet, when she's particularly in a foul mood, breathes fire on them. Aurora has asked for those capable, to try and handle at least the snakes. They're fine while they're in the city, but there is no guarantee they will stay there. The dragon at least seems content staying right where she is. To report a completed bracelet, please reply to the bracelet turn-in comment. Given the fifth mission is scheduled in September, we will continue to accept submissions for this through the beginning of August, at which point we will randomly select two characters. Well, I know you don’t plan to tell me your schemes, but the game’s changed now, hasn’t it? So why don’t you get with it, eh?
[He shifts the loose beads to his palm and picks out a blue one, holding it aloft. He raises his brows.]
It’s not just you helping me, it’s me helping you- and the two of us helping our home. Don’t tell me that’s meaningless.
no subject
Yet here he is, alive and dripping with Ramuh's aether.
Though, that isn't what annoys Barnabas still. No, it's that Cidolfus knows what color he's after, what color he favors. Something so personal and defining as a favorite color is vexing.
So, in response, Barnabas reveals his own string of beads. Silently he unties it, and silently he takes one in hand, curling in within his palm as he takes the offered blue bead from Cid, before placing his offering in Cid's own hand.
As he pulls his hand back, letting the small bead rest in Cid's palm. He has given him a blue one. Neutralizing the trade entirely.]

…Real cute. What’s the matter, nothing to say about all that without Sleipnir around to say it for you? You know— If it were me watching this and judging, I’d tell us to get fucked.
[Cid shakes his head and restrings his beads. Barnabas is clearly in no mood here. He puts away his beads and pats Barnabas heavily on the upper arm.]
Good talk. I’ll see if you’re calmer once you’ve figured out how to get out of your armor.
no subject
He doesn't react to the pat, pointedly ignoring it.]
You have no one to blame but yourself. How easy it is for you to expect forgiveness when no effort is made to earn it. You cannot run from your sins forever.
[Yep, that's where he's standing on this. He'll ignore the comment about being calmer, to anyone else he's the very definition, but to Cidolfus, well... It's probably painfully obvious he is in a bit of a mood.]
no subject
[Cid feels for the cigar in his pouch. As much as he wanted it, he needed to save it.]
And I’m not running from my sins. Not anymore. [He turns to look around the room to find someone else now. ]
no subject
Though, the thought that Barnabas needs to be forgiven is equal nonsense. At least, he doesn't need to be forgiven by Cidolfus. He didn't betray him, he didn't abandon their dream. That's all on Cid!
As Cid goes off to find someone else, Barnabas turns his gaze away, allowing him to leave without much fuss. Though, he will be watching him, his gaze sliding over to him from time to time...]
Later
[Which is when he sees Barnabas, haunting the corner. He's a little drunk, he can't help himself.]
You manage to finish yours, yet? It's getting late, I might turn in... after another drink or two.
[The alcohol has eased his demeanor considerably, as if he's used to seeing the other man here. Cid's is around his wrist now for easy retrieval. Three black, three green, three silver, one blue.]
no subject
Are you pretending failure is an adequate replacement for responsibility?
[Here Cid talked a big game about their role here, and Cid cannot make a single bracelet of a solid color. Barnabas' own is in his hand, and he displays it with little affect.
It is almost complete, save for a single green that disrupts the unity of the blue.]
no subject
... Perhaps at the cost of my own, but I think I might collect the remnants of the others who played similarly.
[He eyes Barnabas' bracelet.]
Saving that for me? Well.
Let's not be absurd. Come now, surely you'd like to rest.
[He unstrung his beads, holding out Barnabas' original blue bead to him.]
no subject
[It's an extreme comparison, but if these are the wages they're dealing in...
At Cid's accusation that he's been saving that for him, he frowns. He maintains it as Cid offers him the blue bead, returning his original to him. It's...odd, and Barnabas finds this whole trying.
His eyes flicking to the bead, then to Cid. He doesn't do anything for a few, long, silent moments. Then he takes it, untying his own to retrieve the green, then putting the blue with the rest.
As for the green? He holds it pinched between thumb and forefinger, holding it at eye level near about, his gaze locked with Cid's.
Then he drops it.]
no subject
Fuck!
[He turns on his heel and tries to find it under a table. ]
Did you see where it went?
[Cid turns, his thought delayed plenty as he realizes.]
Did I just hit you?
no subject
Not hard, or at least, barely worth the notice it garners from Cid after he's gone looking for the bead, yet still he allowed that to happen.
How sloppy of him, though it is better to treat it as trivial as it is, he cannot allow Cid to think something so pathetic has any effect over him.
Barnabas just gives Cid a cold scowl, before he walks over to where the bead had gone: under a table a few feet away. And there he waits.]
Indeed, you did. You have lost your luster, adled your mind with your love for drink.
[He places his hand on the table.]
Come, your bounty awaits below.
no subject
Ah-hah!
[He grabs it, goes to stand up, hits his head on the underside of the table and groans as he scoots out on his butt, looking up at Barnabas as he rubs his noggin. ]
Maybe I've had enough to drink.
no subject
Well, it's something.
As Cid bonks his head on the table, Barnabas gazes down at him with those steely eyes of his, his expression back to its stoic neutral.]
Humiliation is ever the reliable disciplinarian. Mayhap you are not the lost cause you labor to become.
no subject
[There would be a time he'd never ask this, but age and disability have softened him considerably. ]
Or you'll look ridiculous in armor, the inattentive chivalrous knight.
no subject
[He doesn't comment on how he doesn't care what others might think of him, of how he might look, dressed as a knight as he is, and unwilling to help someone asking for his assistance. That it is Cidolfus of all people just makes it all the more distasteful, however.
Still, he cares little for a scene, and less what that scene might ripple out into. He is new here, and he does not need to sour himself so completely with the unfortunate bystanders to whatever it is this might turn into.
So, he offers his free hand to Cid, nothing more.]
no subject
[He takes his hand.]
no subject
Barnabas' grip is crushing, though just enough that it isn't painful, but the threat is there as he pulls Cid up as if he weighed nothing. Then, as the task is complete, he releases him.]
Go now, I will not play as your keeper.
no subject
Fine. Sheesh. You big sour bastard. [He mutters as he sways away. He’ll get home, maybe.]
no subject
What a sorry sight he is. He does not know what this place was thinking bringing Cidolfus here, but perhaps it was a matter of evening the odds, given that they brought Barnabas here as well.]
