(OPEN) TROLLEY REPAIR MINGLE?!

WHO: Anyone!
WHEN: Right after this post.
WHERE: Etrazim (Snake Island) and Farway, surrounding areas by the blue trolley line.
WHAT: Fixing the trolley car and tracks!
NOTES\WARNINGS: None so far, but users should write their CW warnings in their subject lines.

The blue trolley sits a short distance away from the train tracks, upright and derailed but at least not destroyed. The interior could use some help, and the exterior is covered in dings, and at least a few large dents in the outer shell, along with more scratches made by claws or talons. The worst problem is that it’s for some reason, located on Snake Island, making it inaccessible unless someone decides to brave the dangers of thousands of deadly snakes.

The rails are in bad shape too, considering that whatever giant rocks were being thrown around (and for some reason, show no trace of remaining), they’ve left craters along the tracks, making the rails uneven, and in some places, outright splitting the metal in half so the track is useless without some proper welding.

And there’s Jayce, in a clean white shirt with orderly buttons, but his hair is not nicely done as it could be. He’s standing nearby the station, which also has suffered some damage, but not in a way that would stop a train from running if it was fixed, and so it’s not a priority of his. He holds a little clipboard, a pen, and is writing down some notes when people begin to arrive.

“Hey, thanks for offering to help with this. There’s four tasks we need done.” Jayce clicks the pen, and turns his clipboard over to show who he’s speaking to the numbered list.

“One, clear the rubble and debris. Anything that could get in the way of the trolley should be moved at least twenty meters away. Two, any craters and pits need to be filled, with dense materials. No sand, no loose dirt. Three, we need an inspection of the tracks, and in places where it’s cracked, we need those to be cut out, reforged, welded back into place, and sanded until smooth. Finally, we need the trolley inspected, make sure the wheels aren’t dented, out of their alignment, or too loose, and then put back onto the tracks. Ideally, not on Snake Island. So someone who can “lift” it out of there, that’d be best. And if you feel like fixing the cushions or scratches, that’s fine, but not a priority. An ugly trolley car still moves.” Jayce gives half a shrug, and takes back his clip board.

“I don’t care how you do it, as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone, or make things worse,” and he gives a little ‘do what you will’ wave before he starts looking at the tracks that were split to assess how bad it is.

[ with a steady hand, but he doesn't say that, instead he's placing the nail where he believes it should go. he makes sure not to look at the other, and with the weight of his thumb pressing down that he manages to do this with ease. his hand doesn't shake, and he seems to be going at a slow pace to insure it goes down properly through the metal.

as he remains quiet, he leans his head down and his ears never twitch while listening. it seems like he's waiting for something, and when it does come, he pulls his hand and head away satisfied with doing so.

shifting down, he holds his hand out for another nail. ]

[He's quiet during the whole process, watching the older work without any other assistance or tools. He would only say something if the nail was placed incorrectly, but they managed to put it down the right slot.]

What are you listening for? [Asking, once they've completed the task. Handing them the next nail.]

Checking something.

[ that's all he's listening for, elaboration is not key when it comes to shadow. instead, when the nail is given to him. ]

You requested tools, are you not going to use them anymore?

[ or is he too busy trying to see what he can pinpoint what the older hedgehog puts on the wrong side or not? ]

[Oh. He looks to the hammer he had taken for a moment.]

...I was. But I want to know how you're doing this without a hammer. What are you checking for? [A bit of seeing if the older has it right, but mostly curious with their methods.]

This isn't a method you have to learn.

[ he follows the same method again, leaning forward as he listens for something from the look of things. ]

Stick with what you know.

[ which means don't branch out until he perfects what he knows now.

... ]

Once you master that, you can master this.

[It's a good thing the older one continued, because he was about to interject to say he can handle this. But...he makes a point. He supppose. Eventhough he rather just learn the one most efficient way and be done.

The gravel is disturbed as he gets up. He'll walk back over to his lane then to start setting the steel rail down on his side. He picks up one of the nails, examining it. Just hammer it down like the humans do, right...? Although he still wishes he knew what the other was lisening to. He sets the pointed end of the nail over a marking. It doesn't sit still. How can he hit it in one go when he has to keep holding it steady?]

... [Or maybe he doesn't need to. Thumb on top of the nail, he carefully pushes it through the steel. Similar to what the other was doing, but not going all the way through, just far enough to keep the nail from moving. Once it can remain still on it's own, he'll hit the nail down in one go.

...

Except it gets bent on the way down. Huh. Was the angle coming down with the hammer wrong? It's an easy fix for him to pull the nail back out and try again at least. Same as before, ensuring the nail is in straight, standing on it's own and hit it again with the hammer. It goes down and locks in without issue this time. All right, just put to memory how he hit that nail down. He moves onto the next nail, and then another. It's not quick as the other, but it gets the job done.]

[ he's right simply because the other is attempting to learn too much in a short amount of time, the way he carries himself, thirsting after knowledge he's not ready for when he hasn't even learned the basics. it's not a bad thing, but he needs to take it slow, and if he overwhelms himself with information what then?

as he focuses on the third one to insert, he turns his head to listen again, ear near the nail and his gaze catches what the other is doing. seeing the other do the opposite of what was told isn't an unfamiliar sight, he has a tendency to do what he wants at the end because he wants to learn on his own.

he takes what he sees and applies. ]

...

[ is he proud of that shadow, should he scold him? no, it's like a child who gains the chance to utilize new experiences. never does he interrupt what the younger hedgehog does, all it does is tell shadow that there are some things they can do on their own, and they attempt to improve.

even when they move to the next nail.

[Well, when you wake up and suddenly get thrown into the big wide world with hardly any knowledge, two things happen. You get so overwhelmed that you want to curl back up into a ball and hide from it, or force yourself to adapt. This world, at least for right now, is allowing some breathing room to learn. Who knows how long that kind of opportunity will last here. So his desire to gain as much knowledge as he can in a short amount of time is strong right now. And honestly...the feeling of accomplishing something that isn't just destroying, is a nice feeling for once.

He can't help wanting to do more.

He's already trying something different with the nails as he goes. He started setting them up a row of them along the marks, so he can just hammer them all down. Effective, but he still takes his time hammering down each one, or else get a repeat of the first nail. Getting into the rhythm of it now, he's already off to get the next steel rail to set down and repeat the process. ]

[ there's nothing wrong with what he's doing, the end goal is the same: he completes it. that's what matters most of all, and shadow doesn't see the need to correct. all he does is watch like before, and if the other notices, despite crimson eyes the same shade as his own remains on him, the hedgehog never opens his mouth.

he turns his head back to what he's doing before getting up to move to where the younger had worked on his own set.

kneeling down, shadow inspects them. not that he doesn't trust him, but to see the effort up close. his fingers trail over them, seeing that they're nicely fitted before pulling his hand away.

again, no correction. that's a good thing, if shadow is quiet and has nothing to say, that means nothing is going wrong around him. truth be told, the younger should take this as a victory where they was the only one to make a small correction to what the older hedgehog had been doing. does this make shadow feel inferior to the one who told him which sides? no.

it only tells him the other is attentive.

he wants to do right. ]

[It does feel like there have been eyes on him. Well, there are people around, but he ignores it unless addressed. People were always watching him at the base that he got used to it, be it physically there or on cameras.

The sense that the other hedgehog is watching him though, that gets him feeling a little wary. Were they watching his every move? He expects them to do or say something to him at any moment. But it never came. They just kept looking in his direction then. All right.

...Not like he hasn't done that to the other as well, whenever they were around.

Just as he finishes lining the next steel rail though, he will look in their direction when he sees them walk over to the rail he just finished setting down.]

... [Were they looking for a problem...? Makes him anxious when they aren't saying anything.]

[ he's looking for anything out of place, but even as he looks at what the other has done, it's all perfect. if he had issue, he would probably speak up, but considering the other hedgehog handled this well without only tells shadow that the other's learning progress really isn't going to waste.

while he knows the other is watching, and while he has a feeling that his insecurity will blossom.

...

he allows it to.

by doing this, he can gauge how the other feels, if he'll speak up that the silence worries him. if they were unbotheted, they'd continue on confidently, but it seems they're not ready yet.

they still have some time to go. ]
thelightshines: (Because you lit up my world)

[personal profile] thelightshines 2025-05-15 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
[They're lingering around the finished rail for quite some time though. It makes him start to wonder if he did actually do something wrong the longer they just stand there. They're the "expert" on this afterall. So he comes over, looking between them and the nails.]

Did you find a problem?
limiterrings: (pic#17779879)

[personal profile] limiterrings 2025-05-15 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you want me to find one?

[ as if he probably could if he really looked, but things will be slightly inconsistent given knowing is actually perfect in this world. ]
thelightshines: (I miss you more than life)

[personal profile] thelightshines 2025-05-15 05:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[No, not really but-] It wouldn't be good, if it becomes an issue later. [When people start using it again.]

[personal profile] limiterrings 2025-05-15 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So far I've seen no issues.

[ is that praise? maybe. what it sounds like is that from what little he's looked at, the other hedgehog has done well. it's not the best, it's not perfect, but it's effective towards the end goal. ]
thelightshines: (But listen carefully)

[personal profile] thelightshines 2025-05-15 07:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[...Ok. So everything's fine. He quietly nods at that, and just...gets back to it then. Why are they hanging around the rail for so long then...?

If it's nothing, then there's nothing. Accept that and focus on the task at hand. There's still plenty more tracks to lay down afterall. The source of light in this world continues to move across the sky as time marches on. There's a still a bit of tracks left to be placed near the end of the day, but he feels a lot got finished already. He definitely got better at it, becoming almost second nature setting down the rails. It's kind of relaxing almost, once you get into the rhythm of it.

He settles on the rails once another one steel bar is successfully placed. He could keep going, but soon there won't be much light to proceed. Unfortunate that this may be the last one for today.]
